RHJ Community Initiatives

A fiscally sponsored project of the Festival Center

RHJ Community Initiatives (RHJ-CI) is a BIPOC-led national technical assistance hub that supports organizations, institutions, and movements in deepening their practices of care, compassion, and collaboration. We envision a world where collective and community care exist in balance with individual autonomy and well-being. We believe in justice over punishment, and in building abundance that moves us beyond survival. RHJ-CI’s mission is rooted in our commitment to community-driven care, non-carceral approaches to addressing harm, and capacity-building in service of communities most impacted by mass criminalization, gender-based violence, and systemic oppression. Our work and offerings are guided by our Principles of Healing-Centered Harm Reduction (HCHR). At RHJ Community Initiatives, we are focused on capacity-building, community care offerings, and advocacy support to meet urgent needs and advance transformative change within systems-change movements.  Our priorities include:
  • National Sex Worker Harm Reduction Technical Assistance (TA) Network
RHJ-CI seeks to bridge the gaps between the fields of harm reduction, racial equity, and gender justice. RHJ-CI is working to establish a National Sex Worker Harm Reduction TA Network that supports organizations and providers with heart to build provider capacity, support the workforce, deepen organizational commitment, and increase community care specific to people in the sex trades, especially those participating in sex work. The National Sex Worker Harm Reduction TA Network will offer customized training, webinars, implementation technical assistance, train-the-trainers programming, and curriculum/resource development.
  • Community Care Offerings: Grief Mutual Aid & Conflict Transformation
Grief and/or conflict are elephants in the room in our movement spaces. In response to trying times, RHJ-CI hosts a six-session closed, peer-led Virtual Grief Mutual Aid (VGMA) cohort program that provides space to activists and community care workers to voice and tend to grief and rage, as well as design their own local grief mutual aid offerings within their communities. RHJ-CI also offers grant-funded grief mutual aid programming. RHJ-CI utilizes our principles of HCHR to support community-based organizations with conflict transformation support, including accountability support, individual coaching, HCHR-based organizational development, and more.
  • Advocacy & Campaign Technical Support
RHJ-CI provides strategic advocacy support to community-led efforts to end mass criminalization, shift resources out of carceral systems, and expand investments in community-based care. RHJ-CI offers support to systems-change organizers and coalitions to deepen their impact and coordination. From policy analysis and strategy to coalition management, RHJ-CI helps build sustainable infrastructure to advance systems-change campaigns.
